Warm Post-Run Treats
January, 2012
Getting motivated to run in the cold is tough, so it helps if you have something to look forward to. For me, the promise of a large cup of hot coffee from my favorite cafĂ© always helps me push through those last few miles. If a cup of joe or jolt of caffeine isn’t your thing, here are a few other post-run treats to warm your body and soul.
Hot chocolate. Studies have shown that chocolate milk is a great long-run recovery drink, because it has the perfect amount of carbs and protein to rebuild your glycogen (energy) stores and aid in muscle repair. Warming it up before drinking is an ideal way to melt away your post-run chill.
Cider. I always find a mug of hot apple cider to be comforting and tasty after a run, and it’s packed with vitamin C and antioxidants to give you an immunity boost. Pair it with a healthy yogurt or nut muffin for some protein and more carbs to help with recovery.
Oatmeal. Lots of runners I know eat oatmeal before runs, but it’s a satisfying and healthy post-run option as well. Top it with some fresh or dried fruit for some added flavor.
Chicken noodle soup. When I finished the Philadelphia Marathon last year, I was chilly and craving something salty. One of the volunteers handed me a cup of soup—and it was exactly what I needed. Chicken noodle soup is perfect after a long run because you’ll replenish your carbs and sodium as well as get a bit of protein for muscle recovery.
