How to Avoid Super Bowl Splurging

I’m going to a Super Bowl party on Sunday, and I’m definitely planning a run for that day so I can put some calories “in the bank.” Of course, I have to remind myself that burning extra calories doesn’t give me the license to eat all the chips, dips and wings I want. If you’re also worried about going overboard at Super Bowl bashes or other gatherings, here are some strategies to try.

Don’t fast beforehand. Some people skip breakfast and lunch before Super Bowl Sunday because they know they’ll be stuffing themselves later. This isn’t a good game day strategy, because you’re going to show up to the party ready to tackle the appetizers. Eat some fruits and veggies during the day—the fiber will help you feel full, but you won’t be adding too many calories.

Find a distraction. Food is everywhere at parties, so you need to divert your attention. Try to sit or stand as far from the food as possible and preoccupy yourself with the game, commercials or conversations.

Eat slowly. It’s normal to feel hungrier on days that you run, but if you take your time when eating, you’ll find that you don’t need massive amounts of food to satisfy your hunger. Before going back to the buffet table, try waiting 10 minutes. Your stomach needs about that long to signal the brain that it's full. If you're truly hungry after waiting, fill up on a low-cal, fiber-rich food.

Bring your own dish. If the party hosts are known for their delectable high-cal, high-fat foods, bring your own low-cal entrĂ©e or appetizer to the party. The host will appreciate it, and you’ll have at least one healthier option at the party.

How do you handle tempting foods at Super Bowl parties?
